In 2002, a silverback gorilla wandered out of the forest in Abong-Mbang, a small town in eastern Cameroon bordered by swamp, which until recently meant that ecosystem was intact just outside of town. The retired gendarme pictured was called because he had a gun and he shot the gorilla beside the hospital.
